Gichin Funakoshi, the Father of Modern Karate, was born on November 10, 1868 in Shuri, Okinawa. He studied karate from a young age and would take the Okinawan fighting style to mainland Japan in 1922. Funakoshi would live the rest of his days in Tokyo where he taught karate to many students. His first dojo, the Shotokan (Waving Pines School) would eventually be adopted as the name of the style of karate that he created. Funakoshi passed away in April 26, 1957 at the age of 88.

The Moncton IKD will be relocating soon. Sensei Isabelle Bordage told MaritimeIKD.com that she has booked space at Ecole Le Sommet on Ryan Street in Moncton. This is great news for Moncton IKD which was forced out of St. Pat's Family Centre after it closed earlier this year. The new location is not strange to the Moncton IKD. The Le Sommet dojo was operated by Sensei Michel Gaudet until earlier this year. He has since opened a dojo is Dieppe at the Rotary Lodge. The club will be starting soon and more information will be available shortly.
The Maritime IKD dojos are preparing for the Fall sessions. The new Karate Shotokan Dieppe dojo started classes on September 3rd at the Rotary Lodge in Dieppe. Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy will return to their regular schedule on Sept 9 with the return of the Sunday Advanced training classes. The following Tuesday, the youth classes will start back up at 4pm. The dojo will be accepting beginners during this class and in the Adult class at 6pm. Mount Allison Shotokan Karate will be taking part in the Mount Allison SACtivities Fair on September 9th in the Purdy Crawford building. Sensei Michel Gaudet has opened a new dojo in Dieppe, NB. This is great news for the area after the closure of St. Pat's Family Centre which has left the Moncton IKD without a home. The new dojo, Karate Shotokan Dieppe, will be located at the Rotary Lodge at 200 rue Gulf in Dieppe. Classes are Mondays and Wednesday and will run for 3 weeks each month. One week each month the facility is used by other community groups. Class fees are $5 per day or $10 for a family.
The 3rd IKD World Cup took place in Barbados from August 16-19. Members of the Maritime IKD traveled to the Caribbean island to compete and judge at the event. The Maritime IKD is very proud of the competitors for all of their hard work leading up to the event. The competitors had a great showing at the event. Casey Arseneau competed in the Brown & Black Belt Youth Female Kata 11-13 Division. Casey won two elimination matches to make it to finals. She finished 7th in the World with a final score of 28.1. She also competed in the Female 11-13 Kumite Division but did not make finals. Carol Gould received a bye to the finals in the Female 50+ Kata Division. She finished tied for 5th in the World…
St. Pat's Family Centre, the home of the Moncton IKD, closed its doors this week. The family centre located in Moncton, NB was big part of the community for many years. The Moncton IKD instructors will be looking for a new location to run karate classes. We will share information as it becomes available.
Several Members of the Maritime IKD will be attending the IKD World Honbu Camp in Ontario next week. Shihan David and Shihan Janice Pyke, Sensei Norm & Sensei Jolene Robitza, Sensei Roy Stuart, Sensei Doug Dennis, Carol Gould and David Penney will make the trip to Ontario for this outstanding training experience. Each year, the IKD hosts the World Camp at Camp White Pine in Haliburton, ON. The weekend event features training session with IKD Shihan Kai for all ranks. As well as a Bonding Fire, Swimming, Tug of War, BBQ, Movie night, game night and a talent show.
