David Pyke, 8th Dan, began training in 1980 at Mount Allison University. In 1981 he was one of the original members of the Amherst Dojo, which he eventually took over as Chief Instructor and still leads to this day.

He has been the Regional Director for the New Brunswick region for over 20 years and since the creation of IKD in 2011, is the Chief Instructor of the Maritime IKD.

In 2006, Sensei David was promoted to 6th Dan at IKSF Master Camp. He has attended many National and International Tournaments and Master Camps, including as a competitor at the World Shoto Cup in Japan (1992) and Philadelphia (1994). Since then he has been a senior referee/arbitrator at many national and international competitions including Barbados in 1999 and Toronto in 2008 and 2012.

In 2007, Sensei Pyke relocated his Dojo from the YMCA to its permanent home at 100 Spring Street in Amherst, Nova Scotia. The move to this former church also accompanied a name change to Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy. He has received additional training in self-defense pressure point techniques.

In 2011, Sensei Pyke resigned from the ISKF to join the International Karate Daigaku. In February, he was promoted to 7th Dan and earned his Class A Instructor, Examiner and Judge qualifications. During the 2011 IKD Shoto Camp, Shihan David was elected to the IKD Shihan-kai.

Throughout his distinguished karate career, he has trained with many legendary Japanese karate masters. His fondest memory is dojo sparring with the legendary Master Tanaka.
