Gail Gouchie first joined the Amherst Dojo as a parent in January 2000 when her son Jonathan joined the club.
By April 2001 she got tired of watching and joined in herself. Gail came to every class with a smile on her face and worked very hard.
In April 2005 she was promoted to Shodan. In July 2007 she was promoted to Nidan. December 2010 she was promoted to Sandan.
Gail attended the National Championships in 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009. At the 2007 Nationals, She won 2nd Place in Senior Women’s Kata. Gail volunteered at World Tournament in 2008 in Toronto and travelled to the Ontario Summer Camp in both 2010 and 2011.
Prior to joining karate, Gail did not travel but quickly got hooked on going to Nationals and enjoying the comraderie of the family of karateka.
“Gail got to experience many strange foods when travelling with me, but her favorite place to eat and enjoy French Toast all day long and a Bellini was the Pickle Barrell on Yonge Street in Downtown Toronto,” Sensei Janice Pyke shared with MaritimeIKD.com.
Gail was diagnosed with Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease or CJD, a degenerative neurological disorder this past February. But this didn’t stop her, she continued to enjoy each day to its fullest. She was able to continue her karate training into the Spring before the disease forced her to stop.
Her greatest joy in life was her family. Husband Mark, sons Jonathan & Kevin, daughter-in-law Jennifer and grandson Corgan.
The Maritime IKD was devasted by the loss of Gail Gouchie. It was decided that Gail would be named as Student of the Month on Oct 6. Later that day it was learned that she had passed away. Gail will be sadly missed! Rest in Peace!
