Melanie Betts started her karate training in April 2012 at the age of seven. Her first testing was June 2012 and the examiner was Shihan David Pyke.

On Dec. 3, 2016, she received her Shodan from Shuseki Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai & Shihan Maureen Woon-A-Tai.

She began her training with Sensei Isabelle Bordage, Sensei Craig O’Neill & Sensei Barry Ripley. Now she also trains with Sensei Fay Getson, Sensei Jennifer Babineau, Sensei Tony Fahey & Sensei Michel Gaudet.

Melanie has competed in several Maritime Championship throughout the years. She has won a Gold medal, 5 silver medals & 3 Bronze medals. Melanie competed at the 2016 IKD Canada Cup in Quebec and received a silver medal in individual kata & a silver medal in Team Bunkai.

Her mother influenced her at the age of seven to try karate because she did karate as a kid. Melanie tried karate and right away she fell in love with the sport and knew it was meant for her. Later her dad would start his Karate journey.

Melanie is a student in grade six at Magnetic Hill School.

Besides karate, Melanie enjoys ice skating, reading, art and being outdoors with her dog Koby.

Melanie has her sights set on Nidan and will continue training in the sport that she loves.
