The student of the month for June is William Morice of Mount Allison Shotokan Karate‘s Shotokan Kids program.

William is 9 years old and enrolled in the Shotokan Kids program when it began in the spring of 2015.

He saw members of the Mount Allison Shotokan Karate club do a demonstration at the Salem Elementary School in the spring of 2014 and wanted to sign up then. Unfortunately, at the time, the club was about to close for the summer months. During the spring of 2015, the Mount A club started the Shotokan Kids program and William was one of the first to sign up.

“He still talks about some of the things we did at the elementary school,” Sensei Norm Robitza said, “and it has been over a year!”

“William has always been interested in Karate and when the free trial classes were advertised, the timing fit with his other activities and he decided to give it a try,” said William’s mother.

William loves praticing kata and sanbon kumite (three step sparring). He worked on both at home during a break in classes due to the Victoria Day holiday.

His primary goal is to receive his yellow belt at the Maritime IKD Summer Clinic later this month. He plans on continuing his training and hopefully one day becoming a black belt.

“When we started the Shotokan Kids program this spring, we were surprised to have such a great group of kids. They work hard and it was difficult to pick just one for this award,” Sensei Robitza said.

William is a very active young man. He has been playing basketball for four year, baseball for three years and last year he joined football. In his first year of football, he was chosen as the Rookie of the Year. William also enjoys riding his bike , skateboarding, tennis and is learning to play the drums.

“He always has a smile on his face and comes to class ready to train. I know that he will go far in karate,” Sensei Robitza said.

Congratulations William!
