Emily Marsh of the Parrsboro IKD is the November Student of the Month. Emily is a 10 year old that started training at the Parrsboro club in September 2013. She was drawn to karate to learn self defence. Her favorite part of training is the warm up before class and that she can spend time with her father who is also training at the Parrsboro dojo. "Her doctor is impressed with what karate (and swimming) have done for her muscles (especially core muscles) so she wants to continue for physical fitness reasons," her mother said. Like everyone that joins karate, Emily's goal is to some day become a Black Belt. "I forgot to say that I REALLY LIKE my Sensei!" Emily said. Congratulations Emily!

Jonathan Bradet-Legris of the Mount Allison University Shotokan Karate club is the October Student of the Month. Jonathan, who current holds the rank of Nidan and is in his second year of study at Mount Allison University. He has trained in Amherst at the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy for years. When he started attending Mount Allison last fall, he switch to training at the Mt. A dojo. Immediately, his experience was put to use by Sensei Norm Robitza and Jonathan was made an assistant Instructor. Jonathan has competed at the Provincial and National level and has some hardware to show for it. He along with his brother are very talented young martial artists. For Jonathan, karate is a family affair as his mother and brother are both practitioners.

Jeff Alward of the PEI Shotokan Karate Daigaku is the September Student of the Month. Jeff lives in Charlottetown with his wife and son. He is a freelance graphic artist and illustrator. Jeff recently released his first graphic novel. He started training with the PEI club in 2000 and is currently a 2nd Dan. Jeff's favorite part of training is dissecting the basics to improve his techniques. Then applying what he has learned to the rest of his karate. His goals are to continue to train and learn all that he can. He also hopes that he can pass on any knowledge that he gathers to new students. Congratulations, Jeff.

Jenna Stewart of the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy is the August Student of the Month. Jenna is 11 years old and about to enter grade 6. She began training in September 2012 at the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy under the instruction of Shihan David and Sensei Janice Pyke. "I was always interested in some type of self defence training but never took the first step until a friend asked me to join with her," she said. She has enjoyed karate since day one and feels it has helped greatly with her confidence level. Jim Ledgerwood of the Moncton IKD - St. Pat's is the July Student of the Month. Jim is originally from Cambridge, Ontario and started his karate training at the Edmunston club in 1989. For nearly 30 years, on and off, Jim has been involved in the martial arts. He has also training in Uechi Ryu karate another style that was developed in Okinawa, Japan. Jim focuses on clearing his thoughts and emptying his mind in his karate training. "I utilize the fact that I'm actively meditating when I'm in class," he said. Jim is a nightclub musician. Denise Cotton-Dickinson of the Parrsboro IKD is the June Student of the Month. Denise is currently a 6th kyu. She started training after working as part of the 2013 IKD Canada Cup scorekeeping staff. Her daughter had been training for several years at this point but after experiencing the National event she wanted to be more than a karate mom. "The excitement and atmosphere was something I wanted to be part of," she said. Denise enjoys training and working on something that she is struggling with. Jammy Lu of the PEI Shotokan Karate Daigaku is the May Student of the Month. Jammy is thirteen years old and is from GuangZhou, China. He has been living on Prince Edward Island for 2 years. Jammy and his brother Jacky started his training in 2013 after a discussion with their parents. They wanted to have some physical activity and learn to protect themselves. Martine Pelletier of the Shediac IKD is the April Student of the Month. Martine started karate in 2012. She wanted to learn self defense, build up her confidence and keep in shape. Mizuki Matsuura of Mount Allison Shotokan Karate is the March Student of the Month. Mizuki joined the Mount Allison Club in January 2014 and has been a stellar student from her first class. Mizuki is from Suita, OSAKA, Japan and it attending University in Sackville, NB at Mount Allison. When she was young, her big brother used to practiced Aikido. Her parents asked if she would like to also learn Aikido, but at the time she had no interest in it whatsoever. When she was in Grade 12, she ran into unsavory characters in public places and she wished that she had learned Aikido for protection. Mizuki is a three sport athlete.
