The student of the month for August 2015 is Carol Gould of the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy. Carol is a long time member of the Amherst club. She started her training in 2000 when the Amherst club was still active at the Cumberland YMCA. "Karate is something I always wanted to do," she said, "I figured that I better start [when I did] before it was too late!" Carol is a familiar face around the Maritime IKD and across the International Karate Daigaku. She has competed in several tournaments, most recently the 2nd IKD World Cup in Toronto, ON. The student of the month for June is William Morice of Mount Allison Shotokan Karate's Shotokan Kids program. William is 9 years old and enrolled in the Shotokan Kids program when it began in the spring of 2015. He saw members of the Mount Allison Shotokan Karate club do a demonstration at the Salem Elementary School in the spring of 2014 and wanted to sign up then. Unfortunately, at the time, the club was about to close for the summer months. The student of the month for May is Pourya Kazemi of the PEI Shotokan Karate Daigaku. Pourya began his training two years ago in Richmond Hill, ON under the guidance of Sensei Valery Gavrielov, 6th Dan. He trained for 6 or 7 months. He later relocated to PEI and started training at the PEI Shotokan Karate Daigaku. Currently, he holds the rank of 5th Kyu. Pourya who is from Iran has a long line of Martial Artists in his family. This month, Anita & Timi Levy make history. They are the first pair to be awarded the Maritime IKD Student of the Month Award. This mother and daughter pair train at the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy. Anita started training in Parrsboro, NS in 2010 when she was 9 years old. Her mother, Timi, knew the instructor at the Parrsboro club and signed her up to her first class. "When I got there, I discovered I actually had a few friends there that I didn't know took karate," Anita said. Anita trained very hard and achieved her Shodan in November 2013. Michel Nader of the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy is the December Student of the Month. Michel credits his parents for enrolling him in karate classes at the age of 10.
