Carol Gould of the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy is the second person to be featured as both a Student of the Month and Meet the Maritime IKD. Carol is a long time member of the Amherst club. She started her training in 2000 when the Amherst club was still active at the Cumberland YMCA. "Karate is something I always wanted to do," she said, "I figured that I better start [when I did] before it was too late!" Carol is a familiar face around the Maritime IKD and across the International Karate Daigaku. She has competed in several tournaments including the 2nd IKD World Cup in Toronto, ON. Heather Gaudet of the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy began her training in January 2003 when the Amherst club was still at the Cumberland YMCA. "I spent a lot of time at the Amherst YMCA running and working out and would sometimes watch the karate classes." At the time she was looking for a new challenge and thought she would give karate a try. "I was hooked from the first class. It is not just a great way to keep in shape but it is the whole mind, body, spirit connection." For the Richards, karate is a family affair. Carole Richard, 2nd Dan, started training in 1992. Her daughter, Jolène, 1st Dan, started in March 2014 and her son, Marc-André started in March 2017. Carole tested for her Shodan with Shuseki Shihan Woon-a-tai on April 3rd 2004. On March 24th 2017, she was promoted to Nidan with Shihan DaCosta. "I had the honor of having my children testing on the same day; Jolène for her shodan and Marc-André for his 6th Kyu." Carole's first instructors were Sensei Normand Arsenault, Sensei Gilles Daigle, Sensei Tony Fahey and Sensei Noël Daigle. Shawn Landry, 1st Dan, started training in 1988 in Acadieville, NB with Sensei Noel Daigle. “I was bullied a lot in high school not by one but some days there would be ten to fifteen people waiting for me in the locker room at school.” The level of bullying wasn’t just verbal, some days it was violent and horrifying. This dragged on for several years until he told myself enough is enough. At the time Shawn had very low self esteem and afraid to go to school in the morning. Justina Awe, 5th Kyu, started training September 2016 at the age of 24 under the instruction of Sensei Norm Robitza and Sensei Jolene Robitza. Her first test was in December 2016 with Master Frank Woon-A-Tai and Shihan Maureen Woon-A-Tai. Since then, Justina has tested at every grading. In March 2017, she received her 7th Kyu Rank from Shihan W. Dexter Shim and Shihan Frieda Shim. In June 2017, she received her 6th Kyu from Shihan David Pyke. After years of watching her grandson, Samuel, training and accomplishing so much, Mireille Roy wanted to give karate a try. "I saw that karate was something that I really wanted to try." Steve Wong was drawn to karate in 1982. He wanted to learn self defense and trained with Sensei Ron Fagan. In 1986, school was taking him away from his training. He left karate behind for 31 years. What changed to bring him back to his training? His daughter, Bria. Bria began her karate journey in May 2016 under the instruction of Sensei Roy Stuart and Sensei Doug Dennis. Merrik Tower started training in September 2015 with Sensei Norm Robitza at the Mount Allison Shotokan Karate club. In December 2015, Merrik received his 8th Kyu from Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai. He would test under Shihan Josef Woon-A-Tai for 7th Kyu in April 2016 and receive his 6th Kyu from Shihan Frank & Shihan Maureen Woon-A-Tai in December 2016. Merrik has yet to compete in a tournament but has shown interest in doing so in the future. He started karate to build confidence and learn to defend himself.
