The Maritime IKD has a vast experience of karate instructors. The Maritime IKD covers three provinces with 4 dojos in the region. Nova Scotia is home to the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy headquarters of the Maritime IKD. New Brunswick features the Moncton IKD and the Mount Allison University Shotokan Karate club. Prince Edward Island is home to the PEI Shotokan Karate Daigaku. Each dojo has more than one instructor teaching or assisting with classes. This month we would like to highlight the chief instructors of each dojo in the Maritime IKD, especially our Regional Directors, Shihan David and Shihan Janice Pyke.

Maritime IKD Directors – Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy

Our regional organization is lead by Shihan David Pyke, 8th Dan. Shihan Pyke started training at Mount Allison University in 1980 and would later take help start the Amherst Karate Club. He has been the Regional Director for the New Brunswick region for over 20 years and since the creation of IKD in 2011, is the Chief Instructor of the Maritime IKD. Shihan Pyke is a member of the IKD Shihan Kai Senate as one of the founding member of the IKD. Shihan David is an A Level Instructor, A Level Examiner and A Level Judge.

Shihan Janice Pyke, 7th Dan, is the IKD’s Executive Secretary and Tournament Director. She started her training under Shihan David in 1986. Shihan Janice is the Regional Director of Prince Edward Island. Shihan Janice and Shihan David helped Shuseki Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai create the IKD Shiai (Tournament) Rulebook. Shihan Janice is an A Level Instructor, A Level Examiner and A Level Judge.

The Pykes are based out of Amherst, Nova Scotia, where they own and operated the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy. The ASKA is the Honbu dojo (headquarters) for the Maritime IKD.

Mount Allison Univeristy Shotokan Karate Club

The closest dojo to the Headquarters in Amherst is the Mount Allison Shotokan Karate Club. This dojo operates on the campus of Mount Allison University, in Sackville, New Brunswick, from September to March of each year. The club is student run with a Mount Allison student serving as President of the club. Sensei Norm Robitza, 5th Dan, is the chief instructor and travels from Amherst, NS, three times a week to teach classes. Sensei Norm has been training since 1999 under the instruction of Shihan David and Shihan Jance. Sensei Norm is the webmaster for the IKD and the Maritime IKD. He also teaches a Sunday class at the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy. Sensei Norm has graduated the first level (D Level) of the IKD Kenshusei (Instructor Trainee) program. He is a D Level Instructor, D Level Examiner and B Level Judge.

Sensei Jolene Robitza, 3rd Dan, is the assistant instructor for the Mount Allison club.

Moncton IKD

The Moncton IKD is located in the city of Moncton, New Brunswick. The club has operated in different locations in the city over the years but is currently calling Ecole le Summit home. The largest club in the Marirtime IKD is lead by Sensei Isabelle Bordage, 5th Dan. Sensei Isabelle has been training since 1991 and is well known for her many years of competition at the regional, national and international levels. Sensei Isabelle has competed at the National level since 1994. She has missed only two National tournaments. Each time was due to the birth of her children. Sensei Isabelle is an E Level Instructor and a B Level Judge.

Sensei Isabelle is assisted by Sensei Tony Fahey, 5th Dan, a karate pioneer in the Maritime region. Also assisting in Moncton are Sensei Michel Gaudet, 3rd Dan, Sensei Jen Babineau, 3rd Dan and Sensei Fay Getson, 3rd Dan.

PEI Shotokan Karate Daigaku

The City of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, is the home of the PEI Shotokan Karate Daigaku. The chief instructor is Sensei Roy Stuart, 6th Dan. Sensei Roy started training in 1987 under Sensei Ahmed Omer in England. Sensei Roy would train with Sensei Mark Higgins and English Karate legend, Ticky Donovan before relocating to Prince Edward Island, Canada. When he first moved to PEI, he began training under Sensei Daphne Gill in Charlottetown and this is when he joined the IKD family. In 2013, he took over the Charlottetown club due to Sensei Daphne’s work commitments. Sensei Roy is a member of the IKD Kenshusei (Instructor Trainee) program. He is an E Level Instructor and a B Level Judge.

Sensei Roy is assisted by Sensei Doug Dennis, 3rd Dan.
