Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy student, Seth Robinson was featured in the Amherst News this week. The feature article was about Seth's involvement in the recent IKD Canada Cup. Seth was the only Nova Scotia representative that traveled to Saskatoon a few weeks ago. Competing for the first time at a National level event, Seth won a silver medal in Kumite and finished 4th in Kata. Click here for the article.

The Maritime IKD will hold the annual Spring Clinic next week, June 7-8 in Memramcook, NB. The special guest instructor will be IKD Shuseki Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai, 9th Dan. Shihan Woon-A-Tai is the founder and chief instructor of the International Karate Daigaku. This year is his 55th year of training in the art of karate. Mix It Up Studios will be recording the grading once again. They will have grading videos available for sale after the event. The videos are $20. Maritime IKD Team successful at Canada Cup

Saskatoon, Saskatchewan was the location of the 2019 IKD Canada Cup this past weekend. Members of the Maritime IKD traveled to Saskatoon to compete in the event and didn't disappoint. The team was comprised of Seth Robinson, representing Nova Scotia. Seth competed in the 11 & Under Male Brown & Black Belt division. He finished 4th in Kata and won a silver medal in Kumite. This was his 1st National event. Representing New Brunswick were National tournament veterans, Isabelle Bordage, Jen Babineau, Fay Delarge Getson and Angela Leblanc. Isabelle Bordage finished 4th in 18-39 Female Kata and 5th in Kumite. Angela Leblanc won a silver in Kata and Kumite. Jen Babineau won a gold in Kumite and bronze in Kata. Adam and Connor Dickinson started training in September of 2018 at the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy. Both father and son are fairly new to the art of karate and each hold the rank of 8th kyu or Yellow belts. They received the rank in December 2018 from Shuseki Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai during the Maritime IKD Fall Clinic. "We have trained mainly with Shihans David and Janice Pyke and with Sensei Norm Robitza." Adam and Connor have not competed in any tournament yet. Michel Gaudet started karate, way back when he was 12 years old, in 1982. "I always loved to watching martial art movies and I had a friend who asked me to join karate with him. I said sure I'd love to." Karate did not come naturally to him and his friend decided to quit. He told his mother that he also wanted to quit but she didn't let him. "It was probably the best thing my mother ever did for me. I guess, beside giving birth to me." He quickly made more friends and started competing. Again this was not natural for Michel at all. The Maritime IKD hosted its annual tournament this weekend. Students from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia competed for the honor to be called champion. The event was a great chance for newer students and judges to gain experience. It also provided competitors for the 2019 IKD Canada Cup a chance to showcase their hard work before the big one.
