Gichin Funakoshi, the Father of Modern Karate, was born on November 10, 1868 in Shuri, Okinawa. He studied karate from a young age and would take the Okinawan fighting style to mainland Japan in 1922.
Funakoshi would live the rest of his days in Tokyo where he taught karate to many students. His first dojo, the Shotokan (Waving Pines School) would eventually be adopted as the name of the style of karate that he created.
Funakoshi passed away in April 26, 1957 at the age of 88.
