Fumairia from Amherst, NS, officially started training at the age of 15 at the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy March Break Camp (March 12 – 16, 2018). She would borrow karate handbooks from the dojo library and “train” in her basement, but it was definitely less informative training compared to now.
“I still borrow the books and continue to do my training.”
Fumairia tested for her 8th kyu with Shihan David Pyke on June 23, 2018. She has yet to compete in a tournament but hopes to at the next Maritime Championship.
She started her training because karate is something that she has always wanted to do.
“It’s kind of hard to explain because there isn’t really anything that stands out about why I want to do it. I often thought karate as “something I was destined/meant to do; like I was born to do it.”
Fumairia is a 10th grade student. Besides karate, she enjoys drawing cartoons/graphics, computer coding, learning a Capella, and making stop-motion LEGO movies.
“I have a lot of goals to achieve in karate, but to summarize them, it’s to learn everything karate has to teach me. I’m hoping to learn all the katas; my favorite kata, so far is Unsu; kihon, and kumite.”
She hopes to reach 1st Dan by the time she starts university. Right now, she is focused on getting her next belt; 7th kyu.
“My favorite part of training is probably kumite, when we pair up and help each other “hone our strengths and figure/ fix our weaknesses”. You usually work with a different person each time, and everyone has their own different “style”. You get to learn more about your skills and help teach other at the same time.”
Fumairia is a very devoted student. She wants to learn and absorb everything she is told. You can see that she works on her karate at home as she is progressing so well.
“I would like to thank Shihan David and Shihan Janice Pyke for teaching me, Michel for being my “mentor”, Ms. Timi for all the helpful and encouraging feedback and tips, Merrik for being my “karate buddy”, and everyone for just being there and supporting me on my karate journey.”
