Timi Levy’s first class was on the 13th of January 2015 at the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy under the tutelage of Shihan David Pyke and Sensei Janice Pyke.
“I remember being so excited about it,” she said. “I started my classes in the basement of the dojo and I remember feeling so proud of myself being able to join the class upstairs. I’m ‘good enough’ to be with higher belts.”
Unlike most, Timi’s road to karate training was a little different. She didn’t decide she wanted to train and found a dojo. Her daughter, Anita was training at the Amherst Dojo. She holds the rank of Nidan.
“I was the chauffeur for her, I was sitting on the bench waiting for her class to finish. I did that for a few years. Meanwhile, Sensei Janice kept “bugging” saying, ‘You may as well join the club, you are here anyway!’ So, one day I said, alright!”
Timi’s first test was in March 2015.
“I was a little nervous because I was not sure that I was ready for it.”
The next level test was a little easier because she knew what to expect. Most of Timi’s rank exams were with Shuseki Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai and Shihan David Pyke.
Timi’s training has been mainly at the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy. Her main instructors are Shihan David Pyke and Shihan Janice Pyke. She has also had been taught by Sensei Norm Robitza as well as all the different instructors who visited to do the clinics.
Timi has not competed in any tournaments.
“Unfortunately, I have not competed yet. It’s on my bucket list to do. Would be a great learning experience.”
She is a professional violinist who plays many solo concerts. She plays with New Brunswick Symphony Orchestra as well as PEI orchestra. She has been the concertmaster for Nova Sinfonia, Halifax. She’s a chamber musician and a violin or fiddle teacher who doesn’t shy away from playing and teaching viola as well.
Timi enjoys cake decorating, baking, playing card and board games. She loves to travel and go swimming.
“I enjoy meeting people. I’m always up for a new adventure!”
Besides Anita and her husband, Michael, Timi’s home has two dogs: a very handsome black lab/husky Kody, and a cutie pie shih-tzu Ginger.
“They are so cuddly, funny, playful, they make us laugh a lot.”
Recently, Timi was promoted to the rank of Shodan. She was featured along with her daughter, Anita as the April 2015 Student of the Month.
