Student of the Month

Aug 2015 – Carol Gould

Carol GouldThe student of the month for August 2015 is Carol Gould of the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy.

Carol is a long time member of the Amherst club. She started her training in 2000 when the Amherst club was still active at the Cumberland YMCA.

“Karate is something I always wanted to do,” she said, “I figured that I better start [when I did] before it was too late!”

Carol is a familiar face around the Maritime IKD and across the International Karate Daigaku.

She has competed in several tournaments, most recently the 2nd IKD World Cup in Toronto, ON. Carol competed in the Female Masters Division and won a Silver Medal in Kata. This is not the first time she has placed at a tournament.

“My most memorable moment was competing in my first National Tournament.”

Carol doesn’t care about winning or losing but about the experience. It is surprising to hear people say this in today’s society but this shows that Carol truly understands what karate is about. Perfecting one’s self over all else.

Carol works at the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre as a nurse. She is affectionately referred to as “Nursey” by IKD Shuseki Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai.

Carol comes into class and the first thing she does is start practicing kata. She is always keen to attempt new things and work on areas of her karate she needs to improve.

“My favorite part of karate training is working on correcting my own techniques,” Carol said.

She has no problem with asking other black belts to help her. She will ask for help with a technique or a kata that she is not sure about. Carol’s attitude on training is superior to many students. She doesn’t show any ego. She is there to better herself and takes the constructive criticism better than most. It is very refreshing to train with her.

Carol has seen members of her family come and go from karate. Her son, Jason once trained along side of her and she has two grandchildren who are both members of the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy.

“I love how karate is about camaraderie between all students. It doesn’t matter if you are young or old or what color belt you wear. You are all working towards the same goal.”

In November 2013, Carol achieved the rank of Yondan (4th Degree Black Belt).

When asked what her future goal in karate were, Carol replied, “I would like to try for my 5th Black Belt.”

Carol will be in an elite group in the Maritime IKD if she achieves that rank. To this date, only 5 people have been awarded the rank of Godan in the region.

Carol is the perfect person to be named Student of the Month. She embodies the soul of karate. Seek perfection of Character, Be faithful, Endeavor, Respect others and Refrain from Violent Behavior.

Congratulations Carol!
