Chris Munn of the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy and Mount Allison Shotokan Karate is the January Student of the Month.
Chris, who is originally from Saint John, currently lives in Upper Cape, NB. He started his karate training after looking for a hobby that would prove some exercise.
“I’m slowly trying to convert myself from a couch potato to a healthy/active lifestyle,” Chris said.
Chris loves that idea that karate training can continue basically forever. He loves seeing the progression of his training.
“There is always something to learn. I enjoy the challenge.”
Chris took part in his first training in the fall of 2014 with Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai. Chris found that the training was awesome but found that the people were the over all highlight of the weekend.
“I was able to meet a lot of new people and everyone was very friendly and helpful. There is a great community around the IKD.”
He enjoyed watching everyone test, especially the black belts.
After a long weekend filled with hard work, Chris was given a double pass. He was testing for his yellow belt and was surprised to receive his orange belt instead. Having skipped a belt he was excited but realized that he would have to work very hard to learn two katas instead of one.
Chris is currently preparing for his first IKD tournament in February 2015. He is excited to compete and watch everyone else perform.
“I expect it will be a great learning experience.”
Chris has set his immediate goal to work very hard training for his next rank test. He started training in Sackville at the Mount Allison dojo prior to his first test. Chris plans on continuing his training at both clubs. His long term goals are to improve his flexibility and strength as much as possible.
“I am also looking forward to getting high enough in rank to participate in the brown/black training classes.”
