Student of the Month

Jan 2014 – Heather Gaudet

Heather GaudetHeather Gaudet of the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy is the January Student of the Month.

She began her training in January 2003 when the Amherst club was still at the Cumberland YMCA.

“I spent a lot of time at the Amherst YMCA running and working out and would sometimes watch the karate classes.”

At the time she was looking for a new challenge and thought she would give karate a try.

“I was hooked from the first class. It is not just a great way to keep in shape but it is the whole mind, body, spirit connection.”

Heather thrives on the discipline required to improve your skills and enjoys the camaraderie among the club members.

“I enjoy the people in the club and the friendships formed over the years.”

Heather has competed in two National tournament and a few Provincial events.

“My tournament record is not great, the priveledge to be allowed to compete is enough. I am not a die hard feminist but to see such amazing women athletes excel in such a male dominated sport is uplifting to say the least.”

Heather recently received her Yondan from Shuseki Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai.

“That was an extremely difficult but rewarding experience. There is still so much to learn so I will continue to train and perhaps work on becoming a judge in the future.”

Congratulations Heather!
