Brendon Drake of the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy has been named the January 2013 Maritime IKD Student of the Month.
Brendon, who has trained in Uechi-Ryu, Kung Fu and Judo many years ago, joined the Amherst club in April 2004.
He was looking for an all around physical conditioning but couldn’t find it in the workout regimes he had encountered. Knowing karate classes were at the YMCA, he joined just to try it for a month or so. Quickly, he found Karate to be the all inclusive physical and mental conditioning he was looking for.
Brendon like all aspects of karate training. But if I had to pick one or twofavorites, the great workouts obtained through the basic drills and bunkai.
He has obtained his Sandan (3rd degree) Black Belt.
Brendon enjoys researching karate beyond dojo training. His favorite book is “Perfection of Character” by Master Okazaki. It is a text written in such a simple manner that lays out the true essence of karate. This book one does not just read, but use it as a “how to” manual for day-to-day living.
“We are very fortunate to have world class instructors that gives us unlimited, direct access to a quality of instruction second to none.“
