Rod Boland became interested in karate while watching his son Allen training in Parrsboro with his high school friends. Years ago he earned a green belt in judo so karate was an opportunity to resume his interest in martial arts. Rod also started training at the Amherst Shotokan Karate Academy after his shifts at the Amherst hospital.
Karate is an excellent way to develop discipline and to build character – especially in younger people. It is a good way to keep physically fit and can be practiced all year. Rod finds that by assisting with instruction he is slowly gaining a deeper understanding of karate. Karate is more than a martial art but is a family where you make many friends.
