Roy Stuart

Sensei Roy Stuart, 6th Dan

Roy Stuart, 6th Dan, stated Shotokan Karate in 1987 under Sensei Ahmed Omer who had trained under the JKA in his home country of Egypt before residing in England.

In 1990, he attended the English Karate Council black belt championships in London. He competed in team kumite against members of the England national team, this proved to be a great learning experience. Sensei Roy earned the rank of Shodan in 1993. After moving away from the London Area, he began training under Sensei Mike Higgins. He has attended seminars with many different Sensei in England including Sensei Kenneth Funakoshi, Ticky Donovan and Elwyn Hall.

Sensei Roy began training in Japanese Ju-jitsu in 2000 shortly after achieving his Sandan. He soon realised many of the techniques were evident in Kata and this opened up a whole new focus in my karate training.

In 2001, he started his own club teaching adults & children and had this up until moving to Canada in September 2011.

He is often asked what made me move to PEI? Firstly, his grandfather was Canadian and from Souris, PEI. He went to to England during WW2. Sensei Roy started to vacation on the island with his wife Babs and daughter Lacey. They loved the island and way of life so much they decided to move there permanently and gained their Canadian Ccitizenship in 2016.

When he first moved to PEI, he began training under Sensei Daphne Gill in Charlottetown and this is when he joined the IKD family. In 2013, he took over the Charlottetown club with Sensei Doug Dennis due to Sensei Daphne's work commitments.

In 2016, Sensei Roy earned his 6th Dan from Shuseki Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai in Sackville, NB.

As well as his regular job as a motor vehicle technician, Sensei Stuart also has a diploma in Reflexolgy. Karate has given him so much and has met many good friends along the way, all because of taking the first step through the dojo door some 30 years ago.
