October 2013

Rowan Palleske - Sackville, NB

Rowan Palleske of Mount Allison Shotokan Karate has been named the October 2013 Maritime IKD Student of the Month.

Rowan is from Bewdley, Ontario.

She started her training in her home province under the tutelage of Shihan David Ivens at the Ivens Shotokan Karate Club. She has achieved the rank of Shodan with the International Karate Association.

Rowan began training so she could accompany her brother who was attempting to develop self control.

"It became a sanctuary in which I could focus solely on the movements and hone my self-confidence," she said.

After graduating high school, Rowan started looking for a university to continue her studies.

"When I first decided to come to Mount A, one of the main drawing factors was the fact that it had a karate club. One of the recruiting officers told me about the Mount Allison karate club and that's when I knew I was destined to be here."

"Rowan walked into the Mount Allison club and saw the difference in training but didn't walk away," said Sensei Robitza, "She was willing to learn new things and adapt her training to our standards."

Rowan's favorite thing about learning karate is the feeling of inner peace that she gets from being in the dojo.

"There is an ancient spirit of tranquility and respect that I love to be immersed in which stems from the history that karate has."

Rowan's future karate goals are to continue learning and keep an open mind. Eventually she would like to compete at a National level tournament for the experience of that level of training.

Rowan has begun her first year at Mount Allison University where she is studying Anthropology and Archaeology.
