Karate is a family activity for the Hammonds. It started with Owen in September 2010. He was in grade 2 and showed interest in the Martial Arts. His parents took him to St. Pats's Family centre and he enrolled in the karate program. In January 2016, when his brothers, Jack and Samuel, were in grade 2 they also started training. They would watch Owen train and it was decided that the family would give it a try. Mom & Dad (Stacy & John) also began training and can be seen at every event supporting the boys.
Owen received his Shodan on November 30, 2013 from Shuseki Shihan Frank Woon-A-Tai. He was promoted to Nidan on April 9, 2016 by Sensei Josef Woon-A-Tai. Currently, Samuel is a 6th Kyu (green belt) and Jack is a 3rd Kyu (brown belt).
Owen has an extensive tournament career. He won two silver medals at the 2016 IKD Canada Cup in Quebec and a silver at the 2013 IKD Canada Cup in Moncton. He competed at the IKD World Cup in 2015 and several Maritime IKD Championship. His brothers will be attending their first tournament in a week at the Maritime IKD Youth Tournament in Moncton.
The boys love sports. Jack is active in soccer, basketball and tennis. Samuel plays soccer, basketball, tennis and baseball. Owen plays tennis and enjoys biking with his friends.
The boys all attend West Riverview Elementary School where Owen is in Grade 8 while Samuel & Jack are in Grade 3.
The boys goals are to continue to strive to improve their skills. Owen loves to challenge himself. Jack and Samuel hope to continue their training and achieve their black belts. The more advanced they all get, the more competitive they become.
"We even did a family kata at a family reunion last year," said their mother, Stacy, "That was fun!"
They train at the St. Pat's Family Centre in Moncton, NB.
